MCAS BIRDATHON  – Saturday TBA

The Mississippi Coast Audubon Society (MCAS) is excited to announce our Third Annual Birdathon event which will take place in the six coastal counties of Mississippi – Jackson, Harrison, Hancock, Pearl River, Stone, and George.  The purpose of this birdathon is to raise funds to support MCAS activities including bird-oriented workshops, presentations by authors and other experts in the natural sciences, regular birding field trips, and other environmentally-oriented activities held along the Mississippi Coast.  All MCAS events are open to the public.

Any MCAS member may create their own team, or they may be assigned to a team if they do not have a team already.   Teams will be required to travel together throughout the birdathon.  There is no limit to the size of a team, although they typically do not exceed 5 individuals. The teams of birders try to find as many species of birds as possible within a set time period. Birders visit areas along the Mississippi coast looking for birds at their favorite birding spot, watching birds at their feeders, or driving around visiting multiple sites throughout the day.  Participants raise money for MCAS by collecting pledges from family, friends, colleagues, co-workers, local businesses – anyone who is willing to support bird conservation along the Mississippi coast. Donors often sponsor a team for either a certain amount of money per species or by simply donating a fixed amount. Teams are likely to see between 80 to 120+ species during the spring migration in coastal Mississippi. A complete overall list of birds will be posted on the MCAS website after the birdathon is completed. Please email mark.woodrey@gmail.com  if you would like be a Birdathon birder.
